Custom Craft Cabinetry from the Challenge Program

Scratch-made food and drink go hand-in-hand with handcrafted interiors. At least that is what we believe. At Founding Farmers, we love to support and showcase the individual and innovative human spirit. Our latest restaurant in King of Prussia is no exception.

We have built what we call our modern Pennsylvania farmhouse, with the help of many talented artists and artisans. Our First Bake Cafe & Creamery includes a wall of custom-made shelving designed and created by the Challenge Program, a Delaware-based organization teaching at-risk youth valuable construction and mill working skills.

Founding Executive Director Andrew McKnight and his team of young carpenters worked with us to design and construct the custom cabinetry for our space. We think it makes for a cozy and beautiful nook to enjoy a cone of our delicious, hand-churned ice cream or gather with friends before heading upstairs for a meal. It is also a useful showcase for our Compass Coffee, The Founding Farmers Cookbook, and even one of our baby goats made by artist Darla Jackson.

When we were planning the space, we were delighted to have the opportunity to hire the Challenge Program. Since 1995, they have been working to empower and equip 18-24 year old trainees with the necessary career capabilities and confidence to build a successful future. This includes on the job learning, assistance in earning a high school diploma or GED, and job placement services.

As a farmer-owned company, we work hard to carry the values of the family farmer throughout all of our operations, even our construction. When trying to run an earth- and human-friendly business, we know that Everything Matters, including who you hire to design and build your shelves.
