Who Knew Asparagus Grew Like This?

Asparagus is cool. We recently had the chance to tour Godfrey’s Farm, where we are currently getting our asparagus for MoCo’s Founding Farmers. Looking across the field, it is hard to even see that there is something amazing and delicious growing there. Get a little closer, and the miraculous, delicious oddity of asparagus can been seen shooting up all around.

As part of our continual efforts to know our farmers and the source of our food, we joined one of our primary suppliers, Keany Produce, on a tour of this 60-plus acres of asparagus farming on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. They offer these tours daily, as well as berry picking. Our large group was ready for an adventure of learning, and we overheard multiple people saying, “Who knew asparagus grew like this?

As a farmer-owned company, most of us were familiar with the wonderful ways of asparagus in the field and on the plate. Still, it’s always a wonder to get out to the farm, to the place where our food grows. We have to admit, asparagus is pretty amazing, those stalks sprouting up out of the earth.

The Godfrey family has been growing and selling fresh produce for three generations. Originally from New Jersey, the Godfrey’s moved to MD in the 1950s. According to Tom and Lisa Godfrey, “We are stewards of the land. For us, farming is not simply a way to make a living, it’s our way of life. We hope to pass this life on to our kids and grandkids, just as Tom’s parents and grandparents did for him. Our farming practices are sustainable and considerate of the environment, and we are proud of them.”

At Founding Farmers and across Farmers Restaurant Group, we work hard to know our farmer suppliers because we know it always makes for better food for our guests. We were delighted to get to know the Godfrey’s, and we encourage everyone to get a taste of their asparagus at MoCo’s Founding Farmers while it remains in season. Stop by soon or make a reservation.
